Visualizing Diffusion Tensor Volume Differences
نویسنده
چکیده
We present a technique for visualizing the differences between two diffusion tensor MR (DT-MRI) volumes. Our technique registers two DT-MRI’s and then produces a 3D model that allows a user to simultaneously view structure in each volume. The geometric model is based on an earlier one developed to visually represent a single volume with a carefully chosen set of streamtubes [6,7]. In the new model, we choose corresponding tubes in both volumes and show how they differ as a way to display the differences between the volumes. Saturation is used to indicate the magnitude of the difference between corresponding points on streamtubes. Streamtubes follow the orientation of the principal eigenvector of the diffusion tensor at each point in the volume. The cross-section at each point of the streamtube is an ellipse determined by the second and third eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the diffusion tensor. We apply the method to four cases. In the first, we show how the choice of integration method can change the streamtubes by comparing streamtubes generated with different integration methods. In the second case, we show difference models for two volumes that are identical except for noise. In the third case we show differences between two volumes acquired from the same human subject but at different orientations.

متن کاملAveraging of diffusion tensor imaging direction-encoded color maps for localizing substantia nigra
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a form of MRI that has been used extensively to map in vivo the white matter architecture of the human brain. It is also used for mapping subcortical nuclei because of its general sensitivity to tissue orientation differences and effects of iron accumulation on the diffusion signal. While DTI provides excellent spatial resolution in individual subjects, a chall...
متن کاملVisualization and Analysis of Diffusion Tensor Fields
The power of medical imaging modalities to measure and characterize biological tissue is amplified by visualization and analysis methods that help researchers to see and understand the structures within their data. Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging can measure microstructural properties of biological tissue, such as the coherent linear organization of white matter of the central nervo...
متن کاملStrategies for Direct Volume Rendering of Diffusion Tensor Fields
ÐDiffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging is a relatively new modality capable of elucidating the fibrous structure of certain types of tissue, such as the white matter within the brain. One tool for interpreting this data is volume rendering because it permits the visualization of three dimensional structure without a prior segmentation process. In order to use volume rendering, however, ...
متن کاملEnhanced Visualization of Diffusion Tensor Data for Neurosurgery
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a recent magnetic resonance (MR) technique that provides comprehensive information about water diffusivity. Since diffusivity correlates with tissue structure at the microscopic level DTI reveals fibrous structures such as white matter (WM) pathways in the field of neurosurgery. WM tracts are thereby of major interest and the ability to distinguish between diff...
